Do you just love that bronzed, sexy glow you get with a professional spray tan? Yet is that fortnightly trip to the salon breaking your budget? Well the good thing is that doing it yourself is a viable alternative. Spray tanning equipment is easy to operate and there are numerous affordable options for beginners just like you. We have created these guidelines to help you learn to spray tan yourself in no time. Soon you’ll be a spray tanning pro with your own professional tanned look.

Spray tan kits are a great value option. Most will come with a tent to help avoid spray tanned walls, floors and furniture throughout your house. They also come with a spray tan system with spray tan gun; this gives you that perfect even mist-like spray that you get when you visit the salon. This is a motorised system, making it easy to operate and very efficient. Most kits also come with spray tanning solution.

While you learn to spray tan you can go for a more basic kit and advance to more complex kits and spray tan systems as you advance.

As you learn to spray tan make sure you don’t forget the basics – you still need to prepare yourself and your skin as you normally would. So first off make sure you:

  1. Shave or Wax BEFORE applying a spray tan. Shaving and waxing rids not only of the undesired hair, but of your tan too. If you wax, make sure you wait 24 – 48 hours. If you shave you just need to wait a couple of hours before applying the spray tan.
  2. Exfoliate to allow the freshest layer of skin to appear as you remove the dead skin cells on the surface. Exfoliating enables for a more even application of your spray tan. Pay close attention to the tougher, rougher areas of your skin, notably your knees and elbows. We recommend you use a pedi- paddle for toes and feet.
  3. Shower before. You have an 8- 12 hour restriction on showering once you’ve applied the spray tan product, so why not get the shower out of the way before? Additionally, clean skin helps your fake tan settle more naturally.
  4. Moisturise to delay your fresh skin from drying up, while prolonging the life of your fake tan. Please ensure you do this at least 2 hours before applying the spray tan and try to steer clear of heavy or oily moisturisers as these can act as a barrier to absorption.
  5. Protect your hair with a shower cap, coat your nails with clear nail polish, don on a pair of latex (or like) gloves. While you learn to spray tan you need to be extra cautious as you’re only looking to stain your skin, not your hair, nails and hands!

Once you are all prepped and ready to go you can get started applying your spray tan:

  1. Set up the tent in an area where that is tiled our outdoors. The bathroom, kitchen or backyard tend to be the best spots. Add your product to the spray tan gun and plug in the spray tan system.
  2. Spray the product directly onto the skin, try to maintain a distance of 30cm between the gun and the part of your body you are tanning. Start with your toes and work your way up. Take your time. To achieve a realistic looking tan, add a little extra spray tan to the front of your arms and legs and to your cheekbones and forehead. While you learn to spray tan you might want to get some help from your partner or good friend to make sure you evenly spray hard to reach spots such as your back and backs of your ams.

All done! What’s next?

  1. Wait 8- 12 hours before getting near anything water- wise. Yes, that means shower, sweating, rain, etc… You don’t want your hard work and sexy skin to drip off!
  2. Wear dark clothing or no clothing after you’ve applied your tan to ensure that you do not stain your garments.
  3. As always, use a tan extender and moisturise. Your tan will naturally begin to fade after four to seven days, but it is completely acceptable to take whatever steps are needed to extend the life of your darkened skin colour.

Ta-da – that’s about all you need to know to get you started. Once you learn to spray tan and master it, you’ll wonder why you didn’t start doing it sooner. Just think of all that money you can save!
