If you’re considering opening your own tanning business, it’s wise to do some solid research about the tanning industry to help make sure you succeed. Planning carefully from the beginning will not only ensure your business runs smoothly, but will also save you time and stress. The tanning industry is booming, so there’s no reason why you can’t start a lucrative and thriving tanning business as long as you’re well prepared. Here are some tips to get you going:

  • Know where you want to be. Before you begin, you must clarify the type of business you wish to own. Are you interested in opening a spray tan salon or a mobile spray tan business? The planning and costs involved for each of these will vary, and it’s important that you choose a business model that suits your situation. A mobile tanning business will have fewer overhead costs however may be more difficult to establish a client base. There are pros and cons to each so make sure you think them over.
  • Be the best at what you do.  If you haven’t already taken some spray tanning courses, make sure you put the time aside. Professional spray tanning is not as easy as it may look, so it’s important to take some courses to perfect the art. The more courses and training you can do, the better you will be, and the more successful your business is likely to be too!
  • Research your competitors. Take the time to look around the area and see how many tanning clinics are already established. Is there a hole in the market? If there’s lots of tanning clinics but not many mobile businesses then this may be the best option for you.
  • Think about what you like.  Another important part of your research is to determine what works well in other clinics. Go and get a spray tan from a range of the best clinics and take note of what they are doing well to make the experience enjoyable. You can also use this time to learn about what not to do in your own business.
  • Make a business plan for the first 5 years. Make a list of the expenses you expect to incur, which will include start up costs as well as ongoing costs.  Once you have drafted your list, organise to meet with a financial adviser so that you can discuss some important issues. How many clients will you need to see per week to cover your costs? Where can you cut costs? These are all critical considerations in order for your tanning business to succeed.
  • Be savvy with your purchases. With your business plan complete, you should have an idea of how much you can spend on equipment and tanning materials to get started. Make sure you purchase high quality tanning equipment, however shop around to get the right price.  Speak to other tanning professionals about machines that work well for them.
  • Get your business out there.  Once you are ready to start your business, it’s important to do some serious marketing. After all, if you don’t build a solid customer base, your business can’t survive.  Place pamphlets in letter boxes, give your cards to local beauty businesses such as hairdressers, and make sure you have an online presence such as Facebook. Using family and friends to spread the word can also be a huge help and costs you nothing!

With these tips in mind and some careful planning, you are set to start your own tanning business! With the increasing awareness about the sun’s harmful rays, spray tanning is becoming more popular by the minute. So what are you waiting for? Get involved in this booming industry and start your very own spray tan business!
