A spray tan is the safest way to get your summer glow without aging your skin. Not only can you be tanned in summer, but spray tanning can give you the perfect highlight for any season, including winter! In order to achieve the perfect tan, follow the 10 spray tan tips below:

  1. It’s important to wax or shave at least 12hours prior to your spray tanning session. This is because when you remove hair, the pores remain open for a few hours and spraying over these open pores can lead to an uneven and blotchy tan. Waxing or shaving soon after a tan is also a bad idea, as you will remove the layer of tanned skin and possibly create uneven areas.
  2. Exfoliate or scrub your skin before you go for your spray tan. This will ensure you remove the top layer of dead skin cells, which is important in order to allow your skin to properly absorb the DHA tan solution.  Pay specific attention to the dry regions of your body such as the elbows, knees, ankles and feet. These areas must be exfoliated particularly well.
  3. Once you have exfoliated your skin, be sure to moisturise it a few hours before tanning. This prepares the skin to absorb the self-tanning ingredients as well as possible.
  4. Wear a loose and dark outfit to your spray tan appointment to avoid the tanning solution from staining light coloured clothing.
  5. Avoid wearing any makeup, deodorant, perfume, or sunscreen when getting your tan. The chemicals in these products can stop your skin from properly absorbing the tanning solution. Make sure you shower them off in order to ensure an even tan!
  6. Apply a barrier cream to your nails, palms and the soles of your feet to stop your hands and feet from absorbing excess spray tan solution.  You can also rub a small amount of barrier cream into your knees, ankles and elbows to protect these areas from turning too dark.
  7. Take off all of your jewelry and tie your hair back when you get a spray tan to ensure nothing interferes with the evenness of your tan.
  8. Moisturise your body for a week after the session. This will keep your skin hydrated and slow the fading of your tan. This is one of the most important yet forgotten spray tan tips.
  9. Avoid excess physical exercise, sweating and swimming in chlorine pools, as these activities will make your spray tan fade faster.
  10. Finally, if you have any areas that absorbed excess tan then you can use lemon juice to help remove it. Just be careful that the lemon juice doesn’t contact other areas where you still want your tan!

These 10 spray tan tips should help you to achieve a glorious, golden tan for as long as possible! So next time you get sprayed, make sure you follow these spray tan tips!
